M E S S A G E Fellow Skalleagues, guests and friends, Mabuhay! Welcome to Asia and to the 39th Skal Asia Congress. The warmth and friendliness of our host city Cebu is exceeded only by the beautiful surroundings and natural wonders of more than 150 islands that make up the “Visayas,” a region in the Philippines occupied by more than 3.5 million Filipinos who are proud to be called “Cebuanos.” The Travel and Tourism industry is not new to Cebu, the Spaniards having first sailed into this destination in the early 16th century. In fact, the arrival of Ferdinan Magellan in 1521 already found active shipping and trading vessels from Thailand, China, and Arabia. Indeed, Cebu’s Trade and Tourism industry is long on tradition, diverse in markets, and rich in history. During the course of our business meetings, social gatherings, and congress tours, I encourage you to reach out, meet new friends, and get better acquainted with the Philippines because the country’s culture, heritage, and natural history will enrich your personal and professional destination experience. I also urge you to continue promoting sustainable tourism through friendship and peace. On behalf of Skal Asia’s Board of Officers, we thank the organizing committee, sponsors, and Philippine Department of Tourism for all the support given to make this congress a productive, fun and exciting event. Mabuhay and Skal! GERALD S. A. PEREZ |
